The Land

Our Farm

The key to quality begins on the farm.

Our Angus and Hereford herds graze lush pastures, maturing naturally in harmony with the land.

  • Tradition & Care: Farming is more than a business — it’s a way of life. We manage our land responsibly, care for our animals, and protect the environment to ensure quality beef and a sustainable future.
  • Innovation: Advances in genetics, grassland science, and biodiversity management guide us to keep Irish farming environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable.
  • Best Practice: Our farm showcases high welfare standards and sustainable production methods for farmers to follow.
  • Grass-Fed: Over 80% of our animals’ diet is grass — the highest in Europe. Grass feeding produces beef naturally rich in: Protein, B Vitamins, Zinc, Omega-3, Vitamin A & Carotene.

We regularly welcome our suppliers from all over Ireland to show how our best native breeds can thrive through our combination of the traditional care Irish farmers have always had for their herds along with the application of the most up-to-date technologies and innovation.

Rooted in the Land

Prime Angus cattle roam the lush green pastures of Spawood Farm in Balrath Co.Meath where they are fed a sustainable diet which favours the efficient production of Irish beef.

Animal welfare is a high priority on Spawood Farm with many procedures in place to ensure the cattle are content at all times. All cattle brought onto the farm are Bord Bia Quality Assured with the majority being purchased from local farmers.

The cattle are fed two diets: a starter diet and a finisher diet.

The starter diet is high in fibre and starch to reduce the incidence of acidosis and limit the shock to the digestive system of the beef animal.

The finisher diet contains ingredients such as barley, maize silage and grass silage all of which are grown on Spawood Farm with an emphasis to reduce the overall carbon footprint of the farm.

Consistency is of major importance to the day-to-day running of the farm and the overall performance of the livestock with regards to the diets to ensure continuous live weight gain.

There is an onsite vet at Spawood Farm to promptly deal with any health issues that arise within the herd. All farm operatives have completed animal welfare training and have many years experience working with livestock and in the Irish Agricultural Industry.

The GreenFeed

A button tag is attached to the ear of the cattle in the research batch for identification data transfer. The animals are allowed to feed a maximum of 5 times each day with 900g of feed being offered at each feed. The natural breathing of the animal allows the machine to calculate the total volume of methane released by the animal. An average of the 5 measurements are calculated to achieve the average methane emission from each animal each day. Upon introduction of this feeding regime to a batch of cattle it is strongly advised a water drinker is located nearby to encourage the cattle to drink with small paddocks being used so that the cattle do not have to walk a long way to the machine as this will use up energy and have a negative impact on the daily live weight-gain of the animal. The Methane Calculator machine is left with a particular batch for 30-35 days before being moved to a different batch of cattle.
